The father would now live eternally--a man's single and only true promise of an afterlife--through the thighs of the son in his arms, a boy who will perpetuate his name and his place in the universe, until the universe no longer exists. It is this, the covenant of the boy and his scepter, in times barbarous and in times enlightened. It is this the immutable promise of the phallus.
